Abstract: Control of the chemical composition and biomedical effects of water/liquid media activated by air
plasma for emerging applications in biomedicine and agriculture is possible by controlling the
plasma discharge regime, deposited power, plasma-liquid interface area, and gas flow conditions.
We compare gaseous and aqueous reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) produced by
several non-thermal air plasma sources interacting with water: streamer corona, transient spark
and glow discharge. Plasma discharges are operated in open and closed reactors with water
electrospray or in batch treatment of water/cell cultivation media. Examples of successful
applications of such plasma activated water/media for water or surface disinfection, biofilm
treatment, dentistry, urinary tract infection treatment, melanoma cancer cell viability reduction and
apoptosis induction, as well as plant growth promotion will be shown.
