Abstrakt:

The ubiquitous microbial biofilms represent a severe issue in biomedicine and food industry due to their higher resistance to external stresses compared to planktonic bacteria. Cold plasma generated in air at atmospheric pressure proved its potential to combat microbial biofilms. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of cold air pulsed streamer discharge plasma on bacterial biofilms. Antibiofilm activity was investigated for S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli in terms of culturability and reduction of total biofilm biomass by colony count and crystal violet assays, respectively.
The study demonstrated that plasma treatment resulted in significant decreases in total biofilm biomass and culturability, with maximal reduction of 2.3 log for S. aureus for 180 s treatment and a complete inactivation of E. coli and P. aeruginosa for 120 s treatment. The results contribute to the understanding of plasma – biofilm interaction mechanisms and provide an alternative approach for surface treatment and sterilization with cold plasma for future applications.
