Abstract:

A simple similarity rule, appropriate to predict the duration of starting period of a GMA proc ess for the chosen welding source and cross-sectional area of a consumable electrode, has been established and proved. The average temperature of welding wire during short-circuit starts has been also determined. The temperature reaches the melting point at the end of short-circuits. It has been shown that starting short-circuits are independent on the torch stand-off, polarity of filled wire, welding and feeding velocity. The polarity independence of the starting short-circuits governed by thermal processes can be successfully used for a testing of the electric measuring system precision.
