Offer Description

The Division of Environmental Physics of the Comenius University in Bratislava is dedicated to the research of non-equilibrium plasmas, including their fundamental aspects and various applications such as biomedical, agriculture, air and water decontamination, etc.

This PhD project focuses on the study of interactions between low-temperature plasma and polymer materials, with the aim of developing advanced antimicrobial surfaces and coatings. The research will be carried out in an interdisciplinary environment combining plasma diagnostics, surface engineering, and microbiological testing.

The candidate will investigate plasma-generated reactive species and their role in modifying polymer surfaces. Special attention will be devoted to tailoring surface properties to inhibit microbial adhesion and biofilm formation.

Key Responsibilities

Characterization of plasma discharges and identification of reactive species generated during plasma processing

  • Investigation of plasma-induced changes in physicochemical properties of polymer materials
  • Development and characterization of antimicrobial surfaces and nanocomposite coatings
  • Evaluation of microbial adhesion, growth, and biofilm inactivation on modified surfaces
  • Optimization of plasma processes for biomedical and food-related applications

Expected Results

  • Improved understanding of plasma–polymer interactions
  • Development of effective antimicrobial coatings
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of plasma processes or surface analysis techniques
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research involving microbiology and materials engineering
  • Good command of English

Preferred Skills

  • Background in experimental techniques for the characterization of atmospheric pressure plasmas
  • Experience with surface characterization methods
  • Background in microbiological techniques

Additional Information

Benefits

The student is entitled to receive a tax-free monthly scholarship of 1174.50 EUR, further increased to 1367.50 EUR after passing qualification exams. Accommodation in a student dormitory is offered. Additional funds are often available to the most successful and productive students.

Selection process

The candidate should submit a cover letter including motivation, a CV with the list of publications, and the Proof of receipt of the MSc degree (e.g., a scan of the diploma) before 23 Apr 2026. If selected, the candidate will be invited for a preliminary online interview. Then he/she must prepare the formal application for PhD at Comenius University Bratislava together with his/her potential supervisor.

Applications should be sent via email to oleksandr.galmiz@uniba.sk
