Offer Description

This PhD project is focused on plasma-assisted deposition of functional thin films at atmospheric pressure using surface dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). The research aims to develop cost-effective and scalable coating processes for polymer materials using liquid precursors.

The candidate will work with advanced diagnostic and characterization techniques to study the deposition process and optimize coating performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development of plasma-based processes for depositing functional coatings on polymer substrates
  • Selection and testing of suitable liquid precursor compounds
  • Optimization of plasma parameters (e.g., discharge conditions, precursor concentration)
  • Characterization of deposited films using techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and contact angle measurements
  • Evaluation of coating adhesion, durability, and performance under various environmental conditions

Objectives

  • Establish a reliable deposition method using plasma generated above liquid electrolytes
  • Understand key mechanisms governing film formation
  • Improve functional properties of coatings for practical applications

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of plasma processes and plasma technologies
  • Strong analytical and experimental skills
  • Good command of English

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with SEM, FTIR, or surface characterization techniques
  • Knowledge of plasma-assisted thin film deposition is an advantage

Additional Information

Benefits

The student is entitled to receive a tax-free monthly scholarship of 1174.50 EUR, further increased to 1367.50 EUR after passing qualification exams. Accommodation in a student dormitory is offered. Additional funds are often available to the most successful and productive students.

Selection process

The candidate should submit a cover letter including motivation, a CV with the list of publications, and the Proof of receipt of the MSc degree (e.g., a scan of the diploma) before 23 Apr 2026. If selected, the candidate will be invited for a preliminary online interview. Then he/she must prepare the formal application for PhD at Comenius University Bratislava together with his/her potential supervisor.

Applications should be sent via email to oleksandr.galmiz@uniba.sk
